Patna Heat Advisory – Stay Safe During the Heat Wave

Patna is under a heat advisory from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Temperatures are sticking above 42°C and humidity is high, making it feel even hotter. This kind of weather can cause dehydration, heat strokes and other health problems, especially for kids, the elderly and outdoor workers.

What’s Happening Now?

IMD has issued a red‑alert for Patna until the end of the week. The forecast shows daily highs of 42‑45°C with night lows only dropping to about 30°C. Dust storms are also possible in the evenings, which can worsen breathing issues. The heat advisory means authorities are on high alert and may activate emergency response teams if anyone shows severe heat‑related symptoms.

Local hospitals are reporting an increase in patients with heat exhaustion and dehydration. Public transport is running on a reduced schedule during the hottest hours to limit crowding in cramped buses and trains. Schools and colleges have delayed start times or shifted to online classes in many areas.

How to Protect Yourself

First, drink plenty of water – aim for at least 2‑3 liters a day. Carry a bottle when you go out and sip regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks because they can dehydrate you faster.

Dress in light, loose‑fitting clothes made of cotton or linen. Dark colors absorb heat, so stick to whites, pastels or light shades. If you have to be outdoors, wear a wide‑brimmed hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. If you work outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and use a damp cloth on your neck and forehead. Keep a fan or portable air‑cooler at home if you don’t have AC.Watch out for signs of heat‑related illness: excessive sweating, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat or confusion. If anyone shows these symptoms, move them to a cooler place, give them water, and call emergency services (102) if they don’t improve quickly.

Check on neighbours, especially senior citizens, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses. A quick knock on the door can save a life if they’re feeling unwell or don’t have enough water.

Limit physical exertion. Even simple chores like gardening or cleaning can become risky under extreme heat. If you must do them, take short breaks every 15‑20 minutes and stay hydrated.

Keep your home cool by closing curtains during the day, using fans, and opening windows at night to let cooler air in. If you have an air‑conditioner, set it to a comfortable 24‑26°C – lower temperatures waste energy and don’t provide extra protection.

Stay informed. Follow local news, IMD updates and alerts on your phone. If the advisory level changes, be ready to adjust your plans.

By following these simple steps, you can reduce the risk of heat‑related health issues and stay comfortable during Patna’s hot spell. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on those around you.
