India Braces for Intense Weather: Heatwaves and Thunderstorms Loom

India is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) signals a series of unpredictable weather events that could sweep across the nation at the end of March 2025. From the snowy landscapes of Jammu & Kashmir to the sun-baked stretches of Gujarat, the coming days will test the endurance of many.
For those in the northern states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, brace yourselves for a mix of thunderstorms, rain, and even some isolated snowfall courtesy of a western disturbance. On March 26, Jammu is expected to experience a significant rain event, while parts of Kashmir could be blanketed in snow.
Rising Temperatures in the Northwest
In stark contrast, the northwestern part of India is set to sizzle under rising temperatures, with forecasts indicating a 2-4°C uptick in the mercury over the next few days. Central India won’t escape this heat surge either, with parts of interior Maharashtra expected to feel the heat by 2-3°C. No wonder then, that the IMD has issued a yellow alert for regions like Saurashtra, Kutch, and western Rajasthan, urging residents to stay vigilant in the face of relentless high temperatures.
Meanwhile, southwest Rajasthan and Gujarat could be in for a double whammy on March 25, as heatwave conditions bear down on these regions. Odisha isn’t left out of this heat crisis either, expecting its own share of isolated heatwave conditions from March 29 to 31. Coastal areas aren't far behind—the IMD forecasts hot and humid spells for Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and coastal Andhra Pradesh between March 27 to 29.
Strong Winds and Rain Patterns
As if temperatures and storm forecasts weren't enough, strong surface winds, reaching gusts of up to 40 km/h, are expected to whip through northwest India come March 29. While rain remains sparse across the majority of the country, regions like Arunachal Pradesh might face isolated heavy rain and snowfall between March 28-29.
People living in these affected regions are advised to keep an eye on weather updates and prepare for potentially sudden changes. Thunderstorms can come with lightning and gusty winds, while heatwaves reinforce the need for hydration and cool spaces.
